Conditions Treated by Auburn NeuroStar TMS Therapy

Like many newer therapies, NeuroStar Advanced TMS therapy is finding new applications. It was first FDA-cleared in 2008 for treating treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in adults. Since then, additional FDA clearances have been granted for its use as a first-line add-on treatment for depression in adolescents, for anxiety symptoms related to depression in adults, and as an adjunct therapy for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults. TMS for Depression

More patients are seeking non-medication treatments for depression, often due to limited effectiveness or unwanted side effects from prescription drugs. NeuroStar TMS offers a solution with minimal to no side effects, and over 83 percent of patients who complete a treatment cycle experience significant improvement. In fact, 62 percent of those patients experience remission of their depression. If symptoms return, TMS therapy can be repeated, and maintenance sessions can be scheduled to prevent relapses.*

TMS is an in-office treatment that lasts about 20 minutes per session. Once your session is over, you can immediately resume your normal activities. Any side effects are typically mild, easily managed, and often subside as the treatment progresses.

TMS Depression Treatment for Adolescents

When your child is struggling with depression, finding relief becomes your top priority. Just as with adults, medications and therapy are not always enough for teenagers. NeuroStar TMS therapy has been FDA-cleared as a first-line add-on treatment for adolescents aged 15 and older. Research suggests that TMS can be an excellent supplemental treatment when traditional methods do not provide fast or effective results for young patients.

TMS Therapy for Anxiety

Depression often goes hand-in-hand with anxiety. Research has shown that patients with both conditions are more likely to experience treatment-resistant depression. However, clinicians have observed that patients undergoing TMS therapy for depression often see improvements in their anxiety as well. Studies indicate that 70 to 80 percent of adult patients with anxious depression who complete a treatment cycle experience significant relief. About 50 percent of these patients achieve remission from anxiety.

TMS Therapy for OCD

For the 40 percent of adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) whose symptoms are not adequately managed by medications and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), NeuroStar TMS therapy can offer hope. In the last decade, researchers have refined techniques to specifically target areas of the brain involved in OCD. Stimulating these areas with TMS has been shown to significantly reduce OCD symptoms, providing a much-needed option for our Auburn patients who have not found success with more conventional treatments.

*Outcomes Registry data was published by Sackeim HA, et al. J Affective Disorders, 2020, 277(12):65-74. The outcomes reported represent the subset of study patients for which the CGI-S data was reported before and after an acute course of NeuroStar TMS. Patients were treated under real-world conditions where patients may have been prescribed concomitant depression treatments including medications. “Measurable relief” was defined as a CGI-S score <=3 and “complete remission” was defined as a CGI-S score <=2 at the end of treatment.
