Auburn NeuroStar TMS Therapy vs. Other Treatments

Many people want to understand how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) compares to other treatments, such as medication, psychotherapy, and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). Our goal is to equip you with the information and resources you need to make an informed decision about your treatment. If you are evaluating your options and want to learn more about Auburn NeuroStar TMS therapy versus other treatment approaches, schedule a consultation with Beautiful Minds Medical today.

Medication

Medication is frequently the first treatment recommended for mental health disorders, primarily due to its well-established safety profile. Medications work by balancing neurotransmitter levels, which can help regulate mood, emotions, and behaviors. Extensive research supports their safe use when taken as directed.

However, while medication can be effective, some patients do not experience significant relief. Medications often come with challenging side effects, and adherence can be difficult for some individuals, whether due to side effects or other concerns.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy helps you manage the behavioral and emotional effects of your mental health condition. It involves regular sessions with a licensed therapist, exploring strategies to improve coping skills, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Despite its benefits, therapy has limitations. The cost may be prohibitive for some, results can take months to manifest, and the wrong therapist can hinder progress. Additionally, while therapy primarily addresses symptom management, other treatments, such as medication or TMS, may provide more immediate symptom relief.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

ECT is a medical procedure that works directly on the brain, intended to induce controlled short seizures through electrical currents. It is a well-established, safe treatment often used for various mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder and severe psychiatric disorders. Extensive research has shown its effectiveness.

The theorized mechanism of action is that ECT stimulates brain activity and improves communication between brain cells, helping alleviate symptoms. It is administered under anesthesia. However, there is a risk of memory loss (short and long-term) and confusion, and those who cannot tolerate anesthesia may find it challenging. Other side effects, such as headaches and nausea, may also occur, so monitoring after treatment is essential.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that targets symptoms of depression and anxiety at the brain level, similar to ECT. However, TMS does not induce seizures; instead, it uses electromagnetic waves to stimulate the brain. This well-researched, FDA-cleared technology is a safe, non-surgical option.

At our practice, we recommend NeuroStar Advanced TMS therapy, the #1 physician-recommended TMS treatment. Known for its safety and convenience, NeuroStar is non-surgical and can seamlessly integrate into your daily routine, allowing you to resume normal activities after each session.
