Living a meaningful life is important, but Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) can stop you in your tracks, especially if you have treatment-resistant depression that does not respond to medication or other traditional treatment options. Personalized repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (PrTMS®) is a non-invasive alternative treatment for MDD, but it works best in conjunction with other positive daily life habits.
Whether you have already started a treatment plan or are considering PrTMS® for the first time, you also need to consider how TMS and lifestyle changes are related. While it is a great tool for helping your depression, you must continue to care for yourself in other ways, such as diet, exercise, and other forms of upkeep. Let Beautiful Minds Medical show you how PrTMS® and good lifestyle habits may help you take back control of your life.
It is no secret that exercise improves mental well-being. By stimulating the release of endorphins, exercise can boost your mood. When combining the natural endorphins released by exercise with the effects of TMS therapy, you may experience an overall improved state of being and a better general lifestyle. Taking care of your body helps you take care of your brain, and vice versa.
Exercise is not the only lifestyle change that helps you feel the results of your PrTMS® treatments more clearly. Diet is also integral to your physical and mental well-being. Eating a balanced diet of rich, whole foods and lean proteins while avoiding processed foods can support your brain function and reduce bodily inflammation. Overall, this can help sustain the beneficial effects you feel from TMS sessions.
Drugs, alcohol, and other depressants can suppress the positive effects of TMS therapy. Whether it disrupts your sleep or inhibits nerve cell growth factors, substances may hinder your treatment process and limit the results you experience.
Social connections are an integral part of your support network. Family and friends who you can turn to when facing the more difficult moments of MDD should be a major part of your life before and after PrTMS® treatment. Those who help you find purpose and meaning are crucial in maintaining motivation on your path to wellness.
Having a consistent structure to your days can help you find a good balance in your life. It allows you to carve out the needed time for both work and self care. It helps your life stay on track and keeps you focused on your wellness goals, such as attending all your TMS appointments or navigating social outings.
The Beautiful Minds team specifically recommends that all our patients try to build a routine that allows them to get 30 minutes of sunlight before 9:00 a.m. and to be in bed by 9:30–10:00 p.m. to help set their circadian rhythm. This natural resetting of your biological clock helps optimize the outcome of your treatment.
Through PrTMS® treatments and a few adjustments to your daily routine, you can take control of your life and build good habits to maximize your well-being. The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient, occurring during the TMS treatment course and typically not recurring for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).
PrTMS® Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. PrTMS® Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
