NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, non-drug approach indicated for treating Major Depressive Disorder in patients who have failed to improve from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode.
NeuroStar uses precisely directed magnetic pulses to help activate the natural function of the brain’s neurotransmitters using a noninvasive magnetic field similar to that of an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This is not the same as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT).
TMS is an in-office treatment that requires no anesthesia or sedation. You are awake and alert during treatment and can resume normal activities immediately afterwards.
Most treatments are under 19 minutes, and therapy is 5 days a week for 6 weeks. *
* May vary depending on your doctor’s recommendation.
TMS is safe, easy to tolerate and free from side effects often associated with antidepressants.
TMS treatment has no systemic side effects or adverse effects on cognition or sleep. The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site.
Neurostar has been available in the US for 11 years and over 2.3 million treatments have been performed.
Clinical data show that more than two thirds (67.7%) of people with major depression respond to treatment while nearly half (45.1%) achieve complete remission. Studies also show results are maintained for at least 1 year after initial treatment. At Beautiful Minds results may be even better due to our whole-person care approach which incorporates lifestyle principles such as nutrition, exercise, water, sleep and more as part of our treatment plans.
TMS is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode.
NeuroStar is available by prescription only.
