Safety and Side Effects of TMS Therapy

Dealing with depression is tough enough on its own. When medication does not help relieve your symptoms, even small tasks can feel overwhelming. Many patients look for other ways to manage their symptoms but often feel unsure about whether a particular treatment is right for them.

At Beautiful Minds Medical, we offer a safe, non-medication, and non-surgical option: NeuroStar Advanced TMS therapy. NeuroStar TMS is highly recommended by doctors and is known as the best treatment of its kind for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxious depression. If you have more questions, please talk to our clinicians at Beautiful Minds Medical—we are here to help!

Is NeuroStar Safe?

TMS is effective in treating the underlying neurological symptoms that cause major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Many people do not know where to begin when evaluating the safety and side effects of NeuroStar Advanced TMS therapy. You should know that TMS therapy is not any of the following treatments:

  • Surgery
  • Hypnosis
  • Medication
  • Sedative treatment
  • Psychotherapy or therapy
  • Shock therapy or electroconvulsive therapy

Since 2008, NeuroStar has been used over 6.6 million times in 182,000 patients, proving to be safe and effective for adults with depression.

Common Side-Effects of TMS Therapy

Though NeuroStarTMS therapy is very safe when performed by a clinical specialist, some people might experience mild or moderate side effects from their treatment. This can include: headaches, lightheadedness, tingling, spasms, and scalp discomfort/pain.

These side effects are almost always mild in nature and can be treated easily and effectively with over-the-counter pain medication. Additionally, they usually resolve quickly, as your body gets used to treatment—often, they go away after the first few treatment sessions. Some of our patients do not experience any side effects.

Is NeuroStar Safe for Pregnant Women?

Whether NeuroStar advanced TMS therapy is safe to perform during pregnancy should be evaluated on a case by case basis. If you are pregnant and you are considering TMS as a treatment for your mental health condition, speak to our specialists. We can help you discover the option that is safest for your needs.

Patients Who Are Ineligible for TMS Therapy

While NeuroStar Advanced therapy can be a safe and effective therapeutic option for many of our patients, it is not necessarily right for everyone. There are some people who are ineligible for TMS treatment, including:

  • Patients under the age of 15
  • Patients with serious neurological conditions such as epilepsy
  • Patients with certain active and inactive implants

Important Safety Information

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
